How To Make Furniture Covers
Furniture covers are a great way to protect your furniture from dirt, dust, and spills. They can also be used to update the look of your furniture or to add a touch of personality to your home. Making your own furniture covers is a relatively simple project that can be completed in a few hours.
Materials You'll Need:
- Fabric (enough to cover your furniture plus a few inches for overlap)
- Measuring tape
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Elastic cord (optional)
Instructions:
1. Measure your furniture to determine how much fabric you'll need. Add a few inches to each measurement for overlap.
2. Cut the fabric to the desired size. For a basic slipcover, you'll need two pieces of fabric: one for the front and one for the back. You may also need additional pieces for the arms, cushions, and skirt (if desired).
3. Sew the front and back panels together. Start by pinning the two panels together, right sides facing. Sew around the edges, leaving an opening for the zipper (if desired).
4. Insert the zipper (optional). If you're adding a zipper to your furniture cover, now is the time to do it. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for inserting the zipper.
5. Sew on the arms, cushions, and skirt (optional). If you're adding any additional pieces to your furniture cover, now is the time to do it. Sew the pieces together, following the same basic steps as in step 3.
6. Hem the edges of the furniture cover. To hem the edges, fold the fabric under by 1/2 inch and press. Fold the fabric under again by 1/2 inch and press again. Sew around the edges of the furniture cover, close to the folded edge.
7. Add elastic cord (optional). If you want your furniture cover to fit snugly, you can add elastic cord around the edges. Cut the elastic cord to the desired length and sew it to the inside of the furniture cover, close to the hem.
8. Put the furniture cover on your furniture. Once you're finished, put the furniture cover on your furniture and adjust it as needed. You may need to make some minor adjustments to the fit.
Tips:
- Use a fabric that is durable and easy to care for.
- Pre-wash and dry the fabric before you start sewing.
- Measure your furniture carefully to ensure a good fit.
- Use a zipper to make it easy to remove the furniture cover for cleaning.
- Add elastic cord to the edges of the furniture cover for a snug fit.
